What is a Breast Implant Removal?

A breast implant can be removed due to several different reasons. Usually, patients choose to remove breast implants if it’s causing complications; however, some patients want to get them removed voluntarily.

Dr Andrew Broadhurst will remove the breast implant as well as the scar tissue which formed around the implant.

Common Reasons for Breast Implant Removal?

Every patient’s reasons for having their breast implants removed is personal, however here are common reasons women have implants removed.

  • Complications such as capsular contracture, implant rupture, bleeding, or displacement of the implant.
  • Concerns regarding Breast Implant Illness (BII).
  • The medical requirement of undergoing breast cancer treatment.
  • Personal aesthetic preference – Some patients’ aesthetic ideals change. They want a change in size, shape or position, or wish to remove their implants.

Types of Breast Implant Removal Surgery

Breast implant removal without replacement

An incision will be made along or above the breast crease where the implants will be removed through. The scar capsule surrounding the implant may be removed through a capsulectomy.

Breast implant removal with a lift and tightening of the skin – Achieve a natural look

As breast augmentations cause a permanent stretch in the breast, Dr Andrew Broadhurst may also recommend an implant explant breast revision. This will include a lift to correct the sagging caused by the implants, which will elevate the nipple and areola. He will also reshape your breasts to appear more naturally shaped and lifted.

Your breasts will usually look more natural once the implants are removed as they will no longer have the size enhancement. The lift and tightening of the skin is recommended for natural aesthetics.

Breast implant removal with replacement

Many women choose to have replacement implants if the removal is due to an implant eruption, leakage, deflation, capsular contracture or another complication. Implants will last approximately 15 to 20 years before replacement.

This treatment involves removal of the implants, followed by tightening of the skin in some cases, and finally insertion of new implants. More information found here.

What is recovery after Breast Implant Explantation?

Usually, breast implant removal is performed under general anaesthesia and Dr Andrew Broadhurst will use the same incision site from the initial breast augmentation procedure.

The surrounding scar tissue (capsule) will be removed. Patients who have implants removed will usually require less downtime than they required when they had their breast augmentation originally.

Typically only one week off work is required. You must refrain from any strenuous activity or exercise for several weeks, while you allow your incisions and breasts to heal.

What are the risks associated with breast implant removal?

  • Infection of the incisions
  • Swelling, bruising and discomfort
  • Numbness of the breasts
  • Less sensitivity for a couple of months
  • Bleeding of the incision site
  • Thick scar tissue

All surgical procedures carry risks, and Dr Andrew Broadhurst will talk you through these risks prior to your removal surgery.

What scars are caused by breast implant removal?

Generally, the implant removal procedure involves an incision in the breast crease, which will typically only leave a very thin scar.
